In this months’ issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, there is an article by Laura Cohn called "Scams Exploit Hard Times" that talks about new scams that are targeted at the unemployed and those in mortgage trouble. The long and short of this is that before you meet with people who are trying to get a hold of you, you should do a background check.
This is very easy, if it’s a business log onto the Better business Bureau (bbb.com) and put in a zip code, click on the consumer link near the top and enter some information to see if the business is legitimate or not.
For a financial advisor ask them to show you their FINRA report, anything negative about that advisor will show up. If they “can’t” or wont, do not do any business with them.
And never send money to someone that you don't know.
